I’ll admit even I am a little embarrassed to be blogging about this – my little sister’s obsession. But, Disney’s Friday night premiere of High School Musical 2 broke cable and broadcast television records. As if there was any doubt it would.
17.2 million people tuned in to watch Zac Efron and company. For starters, that makes it the most watched basic-cable telecast EVER. Other superlatives include:
- Most-watched TV telecast with kids 6-11
- Most-watched entertainment telecast with tweens 9-14
- TV's most-watched Friday telecast in five years
- Basic cable's most-watched TV-movie ever in total viewers
Not that this is a huge surprise – the first HSM was the highest-rated program ever for the Disney Channel and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon – but wow!
While I was not part of this 17.2 million, I must admit that Karen, Caroline and I did watch it on Sunday night. And, quite unexpectedly, our little Sunday night movie did turn into an event – 7 girls and, yes, 3 guys – ages ranging from about 22 to 32! Frightening. I’ll leave you with this clip that had us “rewinding” because we were so caught off guard and laughing so hard :)

Um, wow. There are no words. Hilarious. That was intense.
i must say melanie and i watched it with the boys in los altos. they were hysterical about it! trying not to show how much they loved it and being too cool to really sing along but they knew it all and watched it probably 3 times while we were there. mel and i also could not stop laughing at this scene...saying he's 19. i wonder if he realized this was beyond corny as he was filming this?
